CAVERNS IN CASTLETON |
||||||||||
Castleton is home to many caverns and mines, due to rich deposits of lead and also the ever popular Blue John for the purpose of making ornaments and jewelry. Guided tours can be taken inside the caverns, where you will see preserved mining equipment and fine rock samples. |
||||||||||
Perhaps one of the oldest mine in the region is Odin Mine - pictured below. It was primarily used for the extraction of Galena, and the veins here would yeild 800 tonnes anually. Additionally, around 3 ounces of Silver was produced per ton. |

Some of the other caves are open to the public with guided tours - this is to ensure the preservation on the area and makes touring
safer. Each of the following caverns are open to the public and families are welcome. Some of them are very deep and very steep - so be sure you have your walking boots on when you visit - additionally,
remember that the temperature below the surface is a lot colder than that on a nice summers day up above - so take a warm jacket! |
